Square Enix Surprises with Strong Sales for Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake
Unexpectedly, Square Enix announces that the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D remake surpassed its sales expectations, a rarity for the publisher.
Three things are certain in life: death, taxes, and a videogame failing to meet Square Enix’s sales targets. Last year saw Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 falling short, and before that it reported Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy undershot expectations and labeled Marvel’s Avengers disappointing.
However, there’s an anomaly this time. One of Square Enix’s titles has not only met but exceeded its sales targets. The game is the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, which has been specifically noted in the publisher’s recent financial report for fostering increased operating income, alongside lower amortization and advertising expenses compared to the previous year.
Despite this individual success, Square Enix still reported an overall decline in game sales and profits, with a reported profit of around $1.6 billion, which is down by 7.7%, and net sales around $1.05 billion, marking a 10.7% decline year-on-year. The CEO, Takashi Kiryu, is entering his third year in charge, and it will be interesting to see whether significant changes occur in the near future.
