Doug Bowser Announces Retirement from Nintendo at End of 2025
Doug Bowser, president and CEO of Nintendo of America, will retire at the end of 2025 after a successful tenure marked by record sales.
Doug Bowser, the current president and CEO of Nintendo of America, has announced his intention to retire at the end of 2025. Bowser has been in this leadership role for the past six years but had dedicated over a decade to various leadership positions within the company. He leaves Nintendo on a high note, following the successful launch of the Switch 2, which debuted on June 5, 2025, and is now the fastest-selling console in Nintendo’s history.
During his tenure, Bowser oversaw the impressive performance of the Switch, which continued to dominate the gaming market and expand into areas like theme parks and films. The Super Mario Bros. Movie released in 2023 grossed $1.36 billion, marking it as the highest-grossing video game film to date.
Nintendo’s official statement praised Bowser for fulfilling the vision of the Nintendo Switch, stating, “Bowser’s distinguished tenure includes delivering on the promise of the Nintendo Switch system to change the way people play video games and bring new experiences to a broad range of consumers.”
In his parting words, Bowser reflected, “One of my earliest video game experiences was playing the arcade version of Donkey Kong. Since that time, all things Nintendo have continued to be a passion for both me and my family. Leading Nintendo of America has been the honor of a lifetime, and I am proud of what our team has accomplished.”
He will be succeeded by Devon Pritchard, a veteran of Nintendo of America, who will also join the NOA Board of Directors and become a company executive officer. President Shuntaro Furukawa expressed gratitude for Bowser’s contributions while expressing confidence in Pritchard’s capabilities to continue Nintendo’s mission.
