Intel Moves to Legacy Driver Support for Older GPUs
Intel has ended game-specific driver updates for older GPUs, shifting focus toward its latest models.
Intel is concluding routine driver updates for all its graphics chips released over the last four years, except for its newer Alchemist and Battlemage GPUs.
In a knowledge base post, Intel explained that they have created two separate driver packages: one for the latest Alchemist and Battlemage GPUs, and another for older models. This includes integrated GPUs from the past five generations, such as those accompanying Intel’s 11th to 14th Gen Core processors and Iris Xe graphics.
Historically, users of these older GPUs will receive only quarterly updates focusing on security and critical fixes. Game-specific improvements, commonly referred to as ‘day 0 support,’ which optimize driver performance for newly released games, will no longer be a feature.
Given that gaming laptops with 14th Gen CPUs are still being released in 2025, Intel’s decision may appear short-sighted, especially considering the limited gaming performance of these older integrated GPUs.
