Fortnite's New Voice Chat Mode Led to Widespread Bans for Toxic Behavior
Thousands of Fortnite players faced bans over the weekend due to slurs and other toxic behavior in a newly launched voice chat mode.
Maybe I’m just complaining, but nothing seems more dreadful than jumping into a Fortnite lobby filled with teens and having to interact via a proximity chat setup. Epic thought it was a bright idea to launch its ‘Delulu’ mode over the weekend.
According to IGN, the mode attracted more than 126,000 players at its peak, marking it as one of the most popular during that period. This enthusiasm likely stemmed from a desire for something different—as seen with the recent success of Blitz Royale. Unfortunately, the nature of Delulu, which involves solo drop-ins using proximity voice chat, also opened the door for betrayal among players, leading to some negative experiences.
Reports indicate that a number of players have taken advantage of this setup to engage in toxic behavior, with “thousands [being] banned already” during the initial weekend of the mode. Epic has pledged to act swiftly against violators as they continue to monitor the community.
“Remember to report in-game voice chat behavior that violates our community rules. This helps us take faster action against offenders.”
(Translation: Remember to report any behavior in the voice chat that breaks our community guidelines.)
The reception on the Fortnite subreddit is mixed, with players expressing varying opinions—from those declaring it a transformative gameplay experience to others voicing their frustration at the negative environment it cultivated. While some have enjoyed the new interactions and stories developed, others have pointed to toxicity as a major downside.
If you missed out on Delulu, it will return for another chance to play from September 26 to 29. Fans are left wondering if additional weekends will be planned or if the reports of misconduct will make Epic hesitant to continue the mode.
